Anne Hathaway delivers a magnetic and deeply eerie performance as the paralyzed author, Verity Crawford. Dakota Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh with convincing anxiety as she uncovers dark family secrets. Josh Hartnett shines alongside them, striking a fine balance between a grieving husband and a morally ambiguous figure. The film succeeds in building a sense of uncomfortable dread, mystery, and pulpy psychological suspense throughout. However, adapting a narrative heavily reliant on reading a secret manuscript often slows down the visual pacing on screen. The movie hesitates to go full camp or overly explicit, leaving it stuck in a middle ground between prestige thriller and guilty pleasure. Several plot leaps and outlandish twists require significant suspension of disbelief from the audience. The frantic and divisive climax leaves narrative logic feeling somewhat fractured for a satisfying resolution.
